Cargo losses falling between two policies

The challenge

The situation

An importer arranged marine cargo cover shipment by shipment, and the warehouse contents were insured separately. Damage found after discharge was repeatedly disputed, since neither insurer accepted the inland leg or the days the goods spent in a rented store. Some shipments moved before cover was confirmed at all.

What we did

What we did

We replaced the shipment-by-shipment approach with an open cover declared periodically, so nothing travels uninsured while a quotation is pending. The transit clause was extended to cover the inland leg and a defined period of storage at the rented warehouse, and the terms of sale were checked against the point at which risk actually passes to the buyer. Survey and notification steps were written into a one-page instruction for the warehouse staff.
